Thread Sealant and PTFE Tape RFQ Checklist

Source thread sealant against the connection it will seal, not as a generic shop supply. Include whether the request supports threaded pipe, hydraulic fittings, instrumentation fittings, fire protection piping, steam, compressed air, water, gas, fuel, chemical service, sanitary work, temporary testing, or routine MRO replenishment. The joint type and service determine whether tape, paste, anaerobic sealant, or an engineered compound belongs on the quote.

Photos, prior purchase orders, maintenance standards, and marked drawings help Westgate connect the sealant to the rest of the package. A sealant RFQ often belongs with pipe nipples, couplings, unions, ball valves, plugs, caps, flange gaskets, studs, nuts, washers, brushes, wipes, torque tools, thread gauges, and leak-test supplies.

PTFE tape, high-density tape, nickel-filled tape, pipe joint compound, liquid PTFE sealant, anaerobic thread sealant, threadlocker, anti-seize, gasket dressing, and flange sealant solve different problems. State the product style required, or ask Westgate to quote practical options as separate lines when the maintenance team is choosing between tape and compound.

Do not let a short description hide an approval issue. Tape may be preferred for quick service or clean removal. Paste may help fill imperfect threads. Anaerobic sealants may need metal contact, gap control, and cure time. Anti-seize may be needed where galling or disassembly matters, but it is not automatically a pipe sealant. Clear product-style notes keep alternates from being compared as if they were identical.

List the pipe and fitting materials: carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, bronze, galvanized, aluminum, PVC, CPVC, polypropylene, copper, or mixed metals. Stainless threaded joints may need extra attention to galling and disassembly. Plastic piping may restrict petroleum-based compounds or incompatible solvents. Oxygen, fuel gas, potable water, food-grade, and chemical service can also narrow acceptable products quickly.

Include service media, operating temperature, pressure range, vibration, thermal cycling, outdoor exposure, washdown, and whether the line will be disassembled regularly. These fields help separate general-purpose compounds from products with higher temperature ratings, chemical resistance, non-hardening behavior, lubricity, clean-release properties, or specific service approvals.

A sealant can be technically correct and still wrong for the job schedule. State whether the assembly needs immediate pressure testing, a short cure window, overnight cure, repositioning time, steam-up timing, low-temperature installation, wet-thread tolerance, or clean-room handling. Cure and set time matter for shutdowns, hydrotests, skid builds, and emergency repairs.

Installation workflow also affects accessories. Include applicator brush, squeeze tube, brush-top can, cartridge, tape width, tape density, roll count, disposable gloves, wipes, solvent rules, thread chasers, sealant-removal tools, and torque guidance when they matter. Buying a case of sealant without the tools to apply and verify it can push labor back into the field.

For maintenance buyers and job shops, the practical RFQ is often a kit rather than one SKU. Build the request around the number of crews, repair kits, machines, valves, manifolds, or outage stations that need coverage. Include roll count, tube size, can size, shelf-life concern, storage limits, preferred pack size, and whether partial shipments are acceptable.

If replenishment is recurring, include bin labels, min-max levels, preferred domestic sources, approved alternates, and no-substitution lines so purchasing can keep the same standard over time.

Consumables can still need paperwork. Put documentation requirements in the first request: safety data sheet, technical data sheet, country of origin, COC, NSF or potable-water notes when applicable, oxygen or gas-service restrictions, temperature and pressure ratings, chemical compatibility notes, shelf life, lot traceability, and customer-approved manufacturer lists.

If alternates are allowed, define the approval path. A different package size may be a purchasing decision, while a changed chemistry, changed service approval, imported substitute, missing SDS, or different cure profile may need maintenance, quality, engineering, or customer approval. Separating exact replacements, domestic options, and fastest-available alternates makes the quote easier to act on.
